As he old cliché goes, “it only seems like yesterday” that our family was gathered around the dining room table at my mom and dad’s home, celebrating Thanksgiving. Going home is always a very special time for me as all of Tish’s family loads up to make the beautiful journey to the foothills of Missouri. This is where I grew up along with my brother and sister; and yes I was the baby by almost 10 years.
The drive there in many ways is the best part for me, I’m sure the first couple of years were for Tish and the kids as well. Then, the stories of my childhood were fresh and exciting; now the ear buds go in, Kindles light up and black Friday ads come out as I retell them for the 100th time. To me, for the most part, those stories bring back memories of good times.
If I allow myself, the sights and sounds of my youth begin to come alive. As a child, I would always sleep on the couch the night before Thanksgiving, so I could enjoy the aroma of the turkey cooking throughout the night. Now, while on the drive home, I can once again smell the turkey and hear the once familiar sounds of mom’s kitchen as it once again comes alive.
It is not just those childhood memories I’m thankful for, as the tears of appreciation roll down my face, my heart explodes with joy. I am so humbled and thankful God called me to shepherd the First Baptist Church of Oswego. Tish and I love each and every one of you.
Speaking of Tish, words cannot express how much I love and how grateful I am for her, our wonderful children and our families. I am also thankful for our great country and the many Veterans who, by serving, have paid the price for our freedom.
Obviously my list, as well as yours, could be endless; however, I am most thankful for the price our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ paid at Calvary. May this season of thankfulness be centered on Him. May we honor Him by living our lives in such a way as to reflect who He really is. May we truly share His love with everyone. If he comes before we meet again, I’ll see you at home.
